Empower U

Empower U

CommUnify has started a new program called Empower U in partnership with Santa Barbara County Workforce Development Board (SBCWDB) and the Foundation of California Community Colleges (FCCC). Empower U offers services to justice-involved and expelled youth, ages 15-18, in North and Mid Santa Barbara County.  The goal of the program is to create a “school to workforce pipeline” for at-risk youth and provide Paid Work Experience. The program is also designed to assist the at-risk youth by teaching skills to prevent recidivism and promote a productive lifestyle.

Referrals and Mentoring

Referrals are received from the public high schools, alternative high schools, parents and Santa Barbara County Juvenile Hall.  The referred students meet with a Case Manager/Mentor to work on a variety of skills and training.

Training and Programs

Interest Inventories, Risk Assessments, Individual Plans, Goal Setting and Conflict Resolution are among the programs that are used.  Once the youth complete the training and have achieved their goals, they begin the next steps to employment.

Paid Work Experience

With the assistance of the SBCWDB and the FCCC, our youth have access to paid work experience in the community.  The Mentor develops skills and job readiness through a variety of practices.  Social Skills, Job Etiquette, Job Applications, Resume writing and Mock Interviews are among those practices.   Once the youth is hired, the Mentor continues with follow-up for a year with the student.
